Barrie has a BSc from the University of Bath (1st Class Hons., Microbial Physiology) and a PhD.


He has been:

  • Member of the Scientific  Staff, Division of Microbiology, National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London

  • Director of Studies, National Institute for Medical Research

  • Head of Microbial Biochemistry Department, Glaxo Group Research

  • Director of Microbiology Division, Glaxo Research and Development

  • Chairman & CEO, Virus Research Institute Inc (VRI), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA


He successfully led the VRI team through the initial public offering completed in June, 1996.  Barrie subsequently led the VRI team through the negotiations which resulted in the merger of VRI with T Cell Science to form AVANT Immunotherapeutics.


As CEO of KuDOS Pharmaceuticals, Barrie successfully led the KuDOS team through fund raisings that brought over £47m into the company from an international group of investors.  He led the company through to negotiating the successful sale of KuDOS to AstraZeneca for $210 million in 2005.
